It was my sincere joy to teach the students of Garden Hills from 2020-2022. They are my pandemic babies and we came out of it together. It was challenging, but so, so rewarding. My first time as an art teacher, and so many experiments, successes, and learning opportunities were had. Here are some of my favorite moments.
Building Community through Collaborative Public Art Projects
William EstradaWilliam Estrada brought his practice to our students in such an energetic way. Students had the opportunity to screen-print posters, t-shirts, and make their own buttons celebrating what makes our school and neighborhood, Garden Hills, great!

University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Art Education DepartmentIn partnership with UIUC, Art Education undergraduates assisted in the workshops and became guests in our school community. Dr. Blair Ebony Smith taught the undergraduate class, Teachers as Researchers: Listening/Sound as Critical Arts-Based Research. As they observed classes and worked with students, they recorded their experiences and later mined them for research and creative context.

Kim Cosier and Josie OsbourneVisiting Garden Hills from Milwaukee, Kim and Josie came to lead our students in creating two 16 ft. parachute paintings. The parachute design was created by Mx. Ayers and painted by students K-5, staff and families. We painted during the school day as well as over the weekend, inviting families and community members to join in!

Hallway Displays
Adams Outdoor Advertising sponsors a yearly student art expo that features artwork by students on digital billboards. In 2022, Onduline M.N.'s artwork was selected. She was in second grade, at the time, and made this artwork at home as a gift for me, I am so happy to share her message of love and joy with everyone in Champaign-Urbana.
