5th Grade
An arts-integrated social science unit focused on the Civil Rights movement. Students looked at the artwork of Gerald Williams and were inspired by his use of color and text to create images of black empowerment. We used the graphic transfer method to create portraits of people from the Civil Rights movement, as well as contemporary figures who are furthering the movement. We then took words and quotes from Martin Luther King Jr's I Have a Dream speech and filled the background with them and vibrant color.
4th Grade
An arts-integrated science unit on eyes and vision. We explored how the eye functions when looking at 3D images and made our own 3D drawings with red and blue sharpie on plastic sheets, offsetting the image. We learned how old-school 3D glasses force one eye to see red, and the other to see blue, making the image shift and "pop out".
